This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Pre-K students live in in a lower socioeconomic neighborhood close to the downtown area. They are all on free lunch. Over 90 percent of the students are Hispanic. At the beginning of school close to half of them didn't speak english.

This Pre-K year is their first experience with school.

They learn, see, and experience new things everyday at school and are always so excited. Unfortunately there are a lot of things in the world to experience that are not at school. They are always excited to learn about something new.

My Project

The Dash and Dot Project has added another dimension to our classroom. Students can now see how exciting coding can be. Robotics opens the door for students to ask questions about how humans can program the robot to do different tasks. These robots can play music, provide a light show, and interact with people or other robots. The challenge for the students is to figure out how to accomplish these tasks.

One of the features that has had the most impact is the fact that more and more creative apps are being designed to interact with these robots.

Once the students have learned certain features, they can download a new app and discover new possibilities. Students who don't normally attempt robotics because they think it is too difficult are drawn in to the Dash and Dot and realize that they too can program it.

The hope is that this type of computer and robotic programming will spark the desire to continue the learning and even create their own codes for the robots to meet class challenges. This opens up the doors for so many students, because the beginners can use pre-designed apps while the advanced learners can start programming from scratch. Thanks to all! Can't wait to see how much these Per Kindergartners learn!”
