Pre-K and K: Literacy in the Art Classroom

My students need a set of classic fairy tale books and art supplies to make paintings and sculptures inspired by these time proven tales.

My Students

Through making art, my pre-K and kindergarten students express their ideas about books in imaginative and entertaining ways. Drawing is the precursor to writing for my littlest students. It is great, communicative technique for understanding and making connections to stories.

I teach art in an urban elementary school.

For my pre-K and kindergarten students, I would like to use classic fairy tales to incorporate literacy and storytelling into a painting and sculpture unit. My students love making art and they love listening to and discussing stories. I feel this combination will motivate and inspire my students to make some wonderful paintings and sculptures that build on the ideas that these classic stories express. I have found that my students often create their own oral stories after they have made a work of art based on an engaging story.

My Project

My youngest students require hands-on materials for fully engaged learning. Painting and sculpting with model magic is so important for them. These materials bridge so many learning styles and ease the transition to school that can be difficult for my youngest pre-K and kindergarten students. My classroom would benefit greatly from having a set of classic fairytales to read aloud for inspiration.

I introduce storytelling to my students as a pleasurable, engaging and social activity.

I have found that classic fairy tales hold my students attention in ways that I am unable to fully understand. I have also found that using stories as a starting point for an art project really generates a great deal of excitement and inspiration. All students feel successful and able to create something meaningful in the art classroom.
