Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am working to give my students an unforgettable general music experience through newer resources. It is clear that my students enjoy music and are adjusting well to a new music teacher. The students I teach are so diverse; they are patient, kind, open to these new experiences and ways of learning music.

I love seeing my student's faces when they are learning something new in music class.

It propels me to make lesson plans for weeks and weeks to come. These students greet me every day with genuine smiles and big hugs. Every child in the school knows their music teacher, Miss Cunningham. They make me feel special, and I would like them to know they are special, have unique abilities, and have a purpose. I want my students to use music as a creative outlet and use hands-on activities to feel and express that.

Being in a Title I school, I am limited on resources. Many instruments are needed to update my music program and keep students creating. Through DonorsChoose.org this has been changing dramatically and all help is appreciated. If funded, the students will have immersive music opportunities and a lifelong love of music.

My Project

Each year in the music classrooms, music teachers get this question, "When are we playing the piano?" "Can we play the piano?" I would like to one day tell my students yes, today is the day we are playing piano! I can do that with your help and by using music centers. Music centers involve small groups rotating to different music stations.

Students always gravitate to the piano and are eager to be able to play it; I would like to give them that opportunity.

It can increase their fine motor skills, reading abilities, concentration, and musical ear training. My students would absolutely be amazed at the day I say we can play the piano. We are hopeful for funding in order to practice this great skill!
