As the only chemistry teacher at this high school who teaches about 200 students, I find that the lack of resources available can make Chemistry difficult to teach and learn. However, as adaptive learners, the show continues and we continue to learn.
We have sent around 25 football players to play professional football.
My students are passionate, full of personality, and have tremendous potential. Our school has tremendous school spirit and pride in their football team, band, and other extracurricular activities. Despite their lack of monetary resources they are able to be the best on the field. That same energy and potential can be applied to the classroom and beyond with the allocation of resources.
At our high school, football is a way of life. For many, it is a way out of their current low socioeconomic living conditions and environment. The engaged community and school pride are incomparable to other schools. The football team is a monumental part of the community. Furthermore, former players who currently play at the NFL level come back and assist with coaching sporadically. Donations to this project will make a difference for the team because the football program is underfunded since the school is a title 1 low-income school. Nevertheless, they still manage to bring home the State Championship year after year, as well as, send athletes to top tier universities (UM, FSU, LSU) and the NFL. Students will use and benefit from the resources I selected inside and outside the classroom. Football teaches students to practice until their performance is close to perfect. The goal for the students who use these resources would be to apply that same resilience and grit of not giving up when in a classroom. For example, when a Chemistry problem proves challenging. Rather, it would enable students to work hard, practice until their academic performance too is close to perfection.
Our school has eight active NFL players.
This school fosters its football players' potential and does the very best to help them succeed and thrive. If they have been able to assist eight individuals to reach the NFL level with the underfunded program imagine how much more they can do if adequate funding was allocated to the team! The effect would be seen on and off the field.
