My students need double dice, a tub of dice, "Show What You Know Math Performance Task Cards," and "How Did You Solve It Math Activity Cards" to improve their math problem solving skills.
My students already love math but many come to 5th grade lacking some math skills. To be prepared for the middle school, my students need to be fluent in basic operations and need to be able to solve challenging, multi-step word problems.
I teach at a Title I school where most of the students are on free or reduced price lunch.
They come to school with little more than a thirst for knowledge. I love to give them the opportunity to step away from the textbook to play and learn with hands-on activities. Working with their peers on fun and engaging activities helps them master difficult concepts, reinforce skills, and develop a life-long love of learning.
My Project
In my classroom, I have a wide range of abilities. Some students do not yet know their basic math facts, others are on grade-level and several are ready for something more advanced. To teach and reach every student, my class is divided into teams and I meet with one team at a time to teach or review a skill. While I'm working with one team, the other teams work independently to build math fluency or practice new concepts. The materials I am requesting will give my students fun and engaging learning activities to help build and reinforce math skills. The Double Dice and Math Dice Tub will allow my students to play games to practice different operations with whole numbers and fractions. The "How Did You Solve It Math Activity Cards" will allow my students to practice different problem solving strategies. Finally, the "Show What You Know Math Performance Tasks" will give my students a chance to practice and explain what they have learned.
These donations will improve my classroom by providing students with high-quality, hands-on activities to practice, challenge, and reinforce their math skills.
Instead of working in a workbook, my students will be "playing" to build on the concepts being taught with the support of their peers. These dice games and activities will make my classroom a place where learning is hard but really fun!
