Help me give my students individual practice books. This will not only allow them to more easily practice at home, but also to individualize their assignments to meet their specific learning needs.
Every day I watch as students, instrument in hand, scurry down the hall towards my room. With smiles on their faces, their voices are loud with excitement as they eagerly unpack. Orchestra students range from five to eleven years old, studying violin, viola and cello. For them, the orchestra room is a place for creativity, friendship, and learning. It is also a safe place, where they are part of a family.
Our school provides instruments to over half of our students.
Orchestra members typically come from the neighborhood where our school is located, which includes areas of low-income housing. Many of these students thrive, in part, because of their membership in orchestra.
My Project
The instrumental music program at our school is a very popular choice for students. However, with limited funding, we are always patching instruments together, running out of necessary materials, and replaying old music. As enrollment goes up, we are unable to provide all the necessary supplies to our students.
We want every student to have the opportunity to participate in the orchestra program, regardless of income.
As a Title I school, we have a large number of students on free or reduced lunch. Their families are unable to provide school supplies for them. They play school owned instruments and something like a practice book for their instrument is an extra expense they cannot afford. We would like to purchase a class set of practice books for our three orchestras. They can be used year after year and checked out to students. By having enough books for every student it will give students a greater opportunity to practice at home and allow their assignments to be individualized. It will also give students who cannot afford their own materials an equal opportunity to participate in the orchestra program.
