Kai is an energetic seventh-grade boy with a love for sports! He has tremendous compassion, and his school pride shines through in everything he does. Kai participates in several sports. He is very outgoing, and he is always looking at ways to improve. He is very respectful, helpful, and always willing to go the extra mile. It's hard not to smile and laugh when Kai is around. His upbeat attitude is always playful, and his laugh is contagious.
This project comes from a research project that my students completed in our English/Language Arts class. The project entailed developing a project based on a personal interest while meeting a need in the community. . Kai started with the pride he felt in our school community, and he combined this with his love for basketball. He quickly discovered the need within that community and his project took off!
This student-led project comes from Kai, a student in my English/language arts class. The project has helped him to develop skills that are preparing him for college and a career. Students were assigned a research project that required them to create a community project based on a personal interest and a need in a community. Kai, being a sports-lover, immediately noted that our basketball team was in need of new uniforms. One academic goal that will be developed through this project is showing the students how they are capable of making a difference when they take the time to engage, plan, act, and reflect. The project will show the entire student body how powerful one voice can be, but it will also show them that hard work and perseverance pay off, enhancing several social-emotional skills. Kai has had to work with the basketball coach, talk to players, and use critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to replace hand-me-down uniforms that are 10 years old. Our uniforms were passed down from the high school basketball team. We don't have any practice jerseys right now, so it's hard to tell who is playing offense or defense when we practice. These jerseys will help our team to play better and work better as a team.
Our school pride is strong, and I know that new uniforms will help us to show that to everyone. I have done the research for this project and met with the coach to find the best ways to reach our goal. Once this project is funded, the boys' basketball team will be a stronger team and feel more confident. I think this will show the team and everyone in our school that they can make a difference! I hope that this project will make other students feel like they can start projects to help out too!
I want to show everyone what DFMS is all about. We are all about Fox Pride! With these new practice jerseys, people will see us as real athletes and know that DF is a great community to join. Right now our players struggle to run drills and practice because they don't have the proper gear.
