Powerpoint is Dead! My students are bored with slideshows, bullet points, and cheesy clip art. They are ready to create truly multi-media presentations complete with video, sound effects, animation and narration. And most of all, they want their presentations to feature themselves as the stars: the newscasters, the hosts, the MC's, the actors. I teach high school students at a public high school located in an urban, low socio-economic status community. On top of the average stresses of adolescent life, my students carry the weight of the constant threat of violence in their community, family financial concerns and the effects of other pervasive injustices in our city and school system. It is my goal that college be an option for every student that comes to my classroom. I teach music, but beyond theory and performance, I often incorporate projects that allow students to become technologically proficient. I know that my students will be expected to use email, the internet and word processing software in college, but imagine the advantage of also knowing the basics of photo, audio, video and web production! The next developmental step in my classroom is to incorporate video into technology projects. Flip Digital Camcorders make it incredibly easy for students to shoot high resolution video and upload it to a computer so they can start the editing process. I want to give my students the chance to work independently on video-based projects. The possibilities are limitless: filming a music video, recording their rehearsals to watch and critique, making short dramatic films, maintaining a classroom video blog/portfolio. In order to make this possible, I need at least 5 camcorders so that my biggest classes (up to 30 students) can work in small groups concurrently. I'm passionate about technology integration. I know that my students who are preparing to enter college haven't had the same exposure to technology as some of their peers in other high school settings. And the skills gained through the process of collaborating, planning, filming, editing and producing are problem-solving skills necessary for my students to be successful when they go to college. If you donate towards this proposal, you will help me give my students a techno-boost, preparing them for college and giving them confidence that they can be creative with a computer beyond the realm of MySpace.
