My Students
In elementary school, you probably had a story time listening corner, and in high school and college, there may have been an audio lab for the music and foreign language majors. So why have we forgotten the middle years?
My ESL students are energetic young teens who come from a range of cultural backgrounds and immigrant experiences, primarily Spanish and Chinese-speaking.
Each day they face the tiresome battle to express themselves fully in a second language. And they advance steadily towards that goal, many having moved beyond the initial confusion and loneliness found when attending a large, urban middle school. Now they must persevere to express themselves with precision and successfully decode grade-level content alongside peers, despite their comparatively limited resources to extend their English language and academic learning beyond school walls.
My Project
With the help of DonorsChoose, our classroom has been enriched with listening center materials like headphones and a multi-function boombox. As the year goes on and these materials circulate among my students, it's clear that our current logistical setup isn't enough to meet the needs of their curious hands.
First, a movable cart would do wonders to make the listening center mobile and allow easy use when I push in to my students' other classrooms. The shelves on this cart plus additional hooks and ties will allow the in-demand headphones to be accessible, but remain organized and tangle-free.
Second, having gadgets that can turn our many out-dated cassettes into a permanent digital library stored on an iPod, which also provides easy access to podcast libraries, expands the audio options my students can choose from.
Finally, what's a listening center without power! Fully functional outlets can be few and far between in today's school buildings, so power strips are a must.
The ways my students can enrich our school community and learn from one another are limitless, as long as they have a safe space to grow their confidence in English.
