My 6th grade 12:1 classroom is full of unique personalities. Youthful, creative, funny, and dramatic, those are words to describe my students. These words demonstrate the ways my students express themselves; through origami, video games, and story-telling.
We are constructing an environment where life-long learning, reflection, and sharing takes place and is welcomed.
Throughout the year we have continued to develop the ways in which we express ourselves while still honoring our individuality, with mediums like art and music to share our experiences. In our small classroom setting where the needs of each child vary, art has been a way to build strong relationships and remove learning barriers. Through arts integration deep bonds have been formed between children as well as adults. We are a room full of creative young minds where every moment is an opportunity for learning.
In order for my students to accomplish their academic achievement goals, they need to feel safe in our classroom environment. The use of art in my classes, specifically painting, drawing, and origami making, has made the classroom a space where students have an immediate strategy to regulate their own emotional wellbeing.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
The creation of art is a daily activity in our classroom that has supported students social-emotional development. When students in my class are struggling to focus or challenged by rigorous work they are allowed to take "Brain Breaks" where they can work on an art project of their choosing. My students know they can rely on this growth mindset strategy during times where they would normally succumb to their frustrations. Instead, they challenge themselves because of their desire to learn—this is what makes art powerful!
