My students live in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district in the nation. The majority of the student population at my school identifies as Hispanic and African American. My school qualifies for the Title I schoolwide program, which means that at least 40% of students come from low-income families. Further, most of my students are raised in single-headed households and qualify for free or reduced price lunch. With these challenges, my students are gritty and continue to drive themselves toward academic and social emotional growth; which can be especially challenging during the middle school years as the human body changes. My students are a talented, witty, and intelligent group of kids with brazen energy. I come from a similar background as my students. I grew up in the South Bronx attending NYC public schools. Currently, I am entering my 3rd year of teaching. I just finished my Master's degree.
