Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We want to save the environment while we have more access to our Leappads. We have been using alkaline batteries in class and want to use rechargeable NiMh batteries to help save our environment while we use our Leappads at home as well!

Our First Grade class is a joy!

They are eager to learn and most are learning English as a second language as well. We are an urban Title I school with 85% of our students receiving free lunch, but we make it happen! Our Schoolwide API was 797 last year! This comes with a lot of hard work from our staff, students, and parents. Learning to read is crucial in first grade (Many Standards leading to 1.16) and we need as many opportunities as possible to help our children and their parents learn English. We also learn about the 3Rs of environmental stewardship - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - and students learn about reusing paper and recycling materials in our classroom. We also have jobs of "Energy Monitor" to be sure our lights are turned off and a "Water Monitor" to be sure students are using the water in our sink wisely! We want to extend this environmental impact to our battery usage.

My Project

There are 3 major impacts of these resources: - After throwing away disposable batteries from our Leappads, my students are anxious to replace our environmentally unfriendly single use alkaline batteries with rechargeable NiMh batteries. Our class is becoming the future environmental protectors by reusing, recycling, and conservation, I want them to make good energy choices as well. 2 - Reading is so crucial to their future that I purchased used Leappads over the years and have a class set. They can practice reading words, have instant reinforcement and hear the correct pronunciation, often when no one at home can help. I also know that when I sent these home over summer, parents have also used the Leappads to help them learn English. 3 - With rechargeable batteries, I will send the Leappads home during the year, not worried about the battery replacement costs (which I bear myself). Students will bring the batteries for recharging and be able to use the Leappads all year!

My first graders need these batteries and chargers to "Power Up Their Learning", allowing Leappads to be used at home as well as in school.

This will allow them to make even more progress in their speaking and reading. Further, it will broaden their lifelong impact on environmental health. By actively using and recharging their own batteries, I expect they will promote rechargeable battery use as another part of their mission in saving the planet.
