My first grade students are enthusiastic and eager to learn math. We are in a Title 1 school in an impoverished area of northern California. My students' exposure to math and science at home is very limited so it is all the more important for them to receive strong STEMs curriculum in school! Identifying, learning the value of, and finding different combinations of coins for a given value, are part of our California State Math Standards, specifically Number Sense 1.5. While money is just a small part of the math we study in first grade, it an integral part of their lifelong learning. It is a natural way to introduce place value, decimal points, formal notation, and other key ideas that will follow them throughout their school career. What a great way to start by helping them understand the basics!
