Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from all over our city. Some of our students are in all AP classes while some are in self-contained special needs classes. Students come to our school for a variety of reasons... the rich offering of athletics and after-school activities, the medical academy, college preparation activities and a variety of clubs and teams. The library is one place where many of them come together. Our students reflect the rainbow of identities of the city. We hope that our collection and offerings can help reflect this rainbow.
My Project
I'd like to make family literacy night part of the next family to promote digital literacy and the New York Public Library's Best Books for Teens 2019 and other services. At our family literacy night, parents could learn about digital resources that are available for free to all New York State residents as well as great reading lists to encourage students to read for fun. Students are pushed to read challenging books in school, but independent reading acts an extra and empowering sauce to the mix.
Fire up our Family Literacy Night by providing a Kindle and physical books as incentives that families and students can actually take home to power up digital and verbal literacy in the home.
In addition to demonstrating digital resources, I will be inviting the New York Public library to discuss the various programs that can make a big difference to parents and families. In addition to literacy programs, the New York Public Library offers technology and career training, as well as citizenship preparation. A successful Family Literacy Night can have powerful ripple effects beyond one night.
This project is also a part of promoting book ownership. Our families need books at home that they can own, share, and create a reading identity. As Miller explains in "Game Changer!: Book Access for All Kids," a National Trust Survey showed "a strong connection between students' book ownership and their reading ability and motivation."
According to Miller students who own books read more frequently and for longer, are more interested in reading, read more diversely, and have more post-education success. Help our students be game changers by giving them more access to great new books to keep and read.
