Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school students are a different breed! They are bright, funny, inspiring, emotional, intense, energetic, and extremely talented. In the midst of discovering who they will become as they continue to grow, they are learning and developing new skills and talents. As their teacher, it is my job to love, support and encourage them as they navigate through this crazy world called "Middle School."
My students are an amazing group of kids from all over the world - literally!
As an ESOL teacher, I work with students whose second language is English. Many come to me shy, a little scared and nervous, yet eager to learn. At times, they speak little to no English and are placed into classrooms where only English is spoken. Imagine how difficult that would be!
Even with these challenges, they are strong young men and women who realize the value and importance of a strong education. They work harder, study longer, and push themselves to be the best they can be. As hard as the middle school already is for kids this age, my students embrace it. They celebrate their differences and the success of one another. They are an inspiration to me!
My Project
"Where's your homework?" - The question that you can here in any classroom, in any school, in any state! It is a never-ending tug-of-war with students to get their homework done and turned in. Getting students to realize that learning should continue beyond the classroom is a difficult task. Difficult, but not impossible!
The struggle with homework can be extremely challenging for my students, English language learners, for several reasons.
They may not have understood the necessary background information covered in class that day. In addition to that, they probably do not have an English speaker in the house who can help them with what they don't understand. Maybe they are a newcomer who came from a country where don't learn the same things we do. There is a multitude of reasons that one of the biggest concerns I hear from content teachers is that "I'm just not getting any homework turned in from this student. How can I help them?"
This project would provide a year-long subscription for up to 4 teachers for PowerMyLearning. PowerMyLearning is "a multilingual, mobile-friendly homework innovation that leverages the 'learning by teaching' strategy to have students teach what they are learning to a family partner at home. The keyword for me as an ESOL teacher is "multilingual." My students and their parents can receive the lesson and materials on their device, in their first language! What a way to bridge the gap! AND I would be able to share this subscription with 3 other teachers. This is a game-changer. Not only are we making learning accessible for all, but we are also strengthening family/school relationships at the same time!
