Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a low-income school in a borough neighborhood in a section of Bronx, NY. The majority of my students are academically and emotionally challenged and suffer from multiple traumas. As a result, they exhibit depression, anxiety, and aggressive behaviors on a daily basis. Their parents and caregivers are also struggling and aren't always able to provide their children with the tools they need to even have a chance at success. A large number of our students are living in temporary housing and are traveling over an hour each way just to get to school.
Because of the trauma of COVID-19 this past spring, over 60% of our students have chosen to learn remotely.
I feel a great responsibility to provide students, staff, and parents the social-emotional tools they need.
My Project
I am really excited about this project! As a veteran school counselor, I am still finding new ways to engage students and teach them tools that they will need in order to be more successful. With so many children (and adults) addicted to video games and technology, I am really committed to teaching techniques about how they can be more mindful and present in their lives. These books on mindfulness and positivity will help students believe that they are worthwhile!
Mindfulness and positive thinking are skills that not only my students need but we all need in these trying times.
These books will go a long way in helping to provide these skills.
