Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are sensitive and soulful, pensive and expressive. They are incredibly creative and dynamic. I am constantly amazed at the beautiful art they make. We are a school located in the South Bronx of New York City. Like many inner city neighborhoods, we lack resources. I would like to give my students access to all the materials they need to create more beauty in the world.

My Project

I would like to incorporate more hands-on experiences for my students during this time when most classes are conducted through Chromebooks and iPads. Both hybrid and remote learning has translated to our students spending hours each day staring at electronic screens. I would like to give my students the opportunity to use a potter's wheel to create ceramic bowls with the self-hardening clay that does not require firing in a kiln. The physical sensation of molding clay with their hands will offer my students a sensory experience that is removed from the virtual one we have all been immersed in during this pandemic.
