This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My 3rd-5th-grade students are kind, unique, and full of energy to learn. They are a part of a self-contained special education classroom for students with communication disabilities such as autism. Our school is a part of the Ward 8 community in Washington, D.C., a low-income area with a ​rich heritage and history.

Despite challenges at home and in the community, my students work hard to improve their academic skills and social skills through targeted interventions and 1:1 technology.

These interventions and technology target the whole student, not just their academics. Communication, self-regulation, and social skills are a huge part of our day because autism affects my students' ability to communicate and process the world around them. My students communicate through pictures, sign language, and assistive technology. These methods of communication help my students achieve academically, as they read, write, and do math. We work hard to improve our self-regulation through strategies such as yoga and deep breathing. At my school, we live by the motto, "Be the best!" and I believe my students really are the best.

My Project

On March 13th, my 8 students and I left school thinking we would be learning from home for two weeks due to COVID-19. Two weeks have now turned into two months, and we will be learning from home for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year.

This project requests funds for postage through the US Postal Service so I can send Distance Learning Supply Packages to my students.

In our classroom, we use a variety of materials like base-ten blocks, whiteboards, and notebooks to demonstrate our learning. I need postage for Flat Rate Boxes so I can send these materials to all of my students!

With your help, each student will receive a distance learning supply package that includes pencils, notebooks, personal whiteboards, markers, base-ten blocks, reading puzzles, brain break materials (Zoob Builderz), and their favorite book we read this school year.
