This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Home is now school! Many of my students' "home" life is unstable and unpredictable even in this time of COVID-19! Some homes are small, crowded, and lack a quiet place to learn. Some homes are group homes or foster care which means more time in a place that is not truly your own. Other homes can be full of attention and challenges that could typically be avoided when coming to school. This kind of trauma makes it hard to focus, stay organized, and do any kind of work most importantly school work!
As a staff, we are online daily (sometimes into the evening) providing support and assisting with connecting to the limited resources available to them.
While some have devices and technology, many were unable to make it to the school to pick up a device due to circumstances beyond their control. This lack of transportation and other resources also makes getting to a meal-based facility difficult as well which leads to a lack of quality nourishment and frustration.
Additionally, our students NEED connection and community. We find ourselves supporting their social-emotional needs more than academic as they are finding it hard to learn from home and properly function.
My Project
School buildings are closed. However, the business of schools is open for business. As the senior counselor, I work to support students with college and career plans after graduation. This work includes sending transcripts, writing recommendation letters, sending scores, and creating academic packets that show more than just the numbers for students. Learning from home also means working from home for me along with my colleagues. My work involves a lot of printing and scanning items to students, parents, colleges, workforce programs and the like. This project will help me make sure everyone receives high quality documents so that students have the best chances for post-secondary success!
