Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The last school year was so challenging for all our students. We operated on a hybrid model where the students only attended school every other day and were required to complete schoolwork at home on their "beyond the building" day. Some students were completely distance learning. Everyone struggled with this.
These kids are now back in school and learning in a new normal that requires them to wear masks at all times inside the building.
Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with limited resources available. I want to help alleviate this. Our school, built-in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program. Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers. This allows them to keep the same core set of teachers who will stay with them for their entire middle school journey. Team Texas is home to a diverse group of young people all striving to do the best they can with the materials they have.
My Project
These supplies are needed in my classroom for the collaborative charts my students create about our social studies content and other activities. I use these all the time in my classroom and never seem to have enough.
These posters and markers will be used for brainstorming and to check for understanding sections of the social studies lesson that I teach as well as for me to create anchor charts of our current lessons.
One of our social studies standards asks for the students to construct organized explanations for various audiences and purposes using evidence and reasoning. SS.6-8.EWC.8. These charts and markers will allow my students to create posters about their learning in class.
