Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun.

My students are diversity personified: from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

When I greet them each day, some are ready to be challenged and others are ready to be challenging. In middle school, you never know what the day might hold. One thing's for certain: most days are extremely busy and completely unpredictable!

My Project

At AWOMS, we have launched a token economy system that rewards students who earn a Bulldog BARK by being safe, accountable, responsible, and kind. This social-emotional learning helps students remain focused on positive behavior and academics. According to the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, "token economies help students to visualize progress, accept and work for delayed reinforcement, learn to self-monitor, and learn to regulate behavior." All students in our school will be positively impacted by this program as it serves as an incentive for good character and behavior. Token economies are especially helpful for students in our special education programs.

A vibrant mini-economy also teaches important economic concepts such as scarcity, opportunity cost, money management, productivity, specialization, supply and demand, trade, profit, and inflation.

Furthermore, these concepts aren't taught in isolation but are presented in a realistic, integrated setting that makes the concepts in economics much more hands-on and easier to understand.

Please help provide our students with Bluetooth speakers and headphones, selfie sticks, and phone kickstands that they will want to motivate them to show positive behavior and earn.
