My Students

My students come from difficult backgrounds, ones I can't even imagine. We are a Title I school with 100% free/reduced lunch. My students face challenges every day that I could never dream of. What I love about my students, though, is that no matter what hardship they have faced in life they refuse to let people put them in a box. They are bright young men and young women. They push themselves to do better. They are fighters. They crave education. They want to learn.

They want to be better than what society tells them they are.

My Project

Our school has implemented the PBIS program (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support). I have seen first hand that this program can work and students really will buy into it. We are implementing this program schoolwide. Some of the behavior incentives include students receiving a slushie at lunch if they have not been tardy for a whole 9 weeks, or if they have not received any office discipline referrals that month. The kids love to be recognized for doing well and I want this to carry over into my classroom.

Even though they're high school students, they love to be rewarded for doing well - especially with candy!

I want to be able to reward my students for positive behaviors such as passing a test, having good study habits, winning a review game, reading during their downtime, etc. My kids loved to be recognized for their hard work and I want to be able to do that in the classroom. I want them to see that their hard work and positive behavior are not going unnoticed. One upside is that this will also encourage students who do not have a record of positive behaviors to begin doing so. This project will allow students to choose from candy, snacks, and fidget toys from the Rewards Box. I want my students know I see them and appreciate them.
