We are a Title I magnet school that has been in existence since 1996. We are a full magnet offering a Visual and Performing Arts program to all of our students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Our vision reflects our school’s spirit: “Through the arts, students will be inspired to become creative problem solvers, productive citizens, and lifelong learners.”
Our students truly LOVE nonfiction books!
Biographies, dinosaurs, automobiles, sports, science, wild animals, pets, history - the list goes on and on! Because so few of our students have the opportunity to travel even 50 miles away from their homes, these books have the ability of transporting them through space and time in a way that they don't have in their daily lives.
My Project
My students are naturally curious about the world in whch they live, but even more so about all of the different kinds of people who are remembered, in some cases, hundreds and even thousands of years after their deaths, and how they achieved greatness in their fields. Beginning with my 2nd graders, I introduce my students to the biographies of some of the greatest figures in American and world history.
My students want to understand these role models - what made them tick, where did they find their passion, how did they overcome adversity.
This popular series of nonfiction books are well written and full of interesting facts that appeal to even the most reluctant readers. Some of the titles include artists like Frida Khalo, Norman Rockwell, Louis Armstrong, and Maria Tallchief - whose stories resonate with many of my students because they attend a performnig arts magnet. Other inspirational leaders highlighted in the series include Michelle Obama, Ernest Shackleton, Nelson Mandela, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
