Positive Reinforcers Needed for Special Needs Students

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are autistic, intellectually disabled, speech impaired and/or other health impaired. Each one thrives on structure and routine. Their favorite time of day is "Sign-in & Calendar" when they use the ActivBoard, greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and "show off."
Our school is very supportive and inclusive.
My students enjoy participating in activities such as reading buddies, grade level inclusion and peer to peer mentoring. Wherever we go in school, other students call out "hello" to my students and call them by name. They are an important part of our school community.
My Project
Sometimes finding what motivates children with autism can be difficult. Motivated students are active participants and learners. After completing a preferred item inventory, I've found that several of my students find wind-up toys, light up and spin toys, water beads and music highly motivating. Sometimes it just takes a mini M&M, but not this time.
Highly valued reinforcers are needed!
My students are learning to communicate and it's so exciting. I need items they find so appealing they will communicate to get them.
What does that really mean?.... Get them to communicate?... I want my students to push a button, point, touch, vocalize, grimace, speak or do anything I can then turn into a communication attempt and reinforce it. What does that look like? If my student looks at a picture in a book and smiles, I could say, "Hey, I see you like that! Thanks for saying I like that." This is followed by immediate reinforcement with the wind-up toy or spinner. If the child smiles at the toy, I can say it all again and reinforce the behavior again. Hopefully, this all moves toward more purposeful expressive communication for the student.
