My students want to have positive reading experiences; they want to bond with characters, learn new perspectives, and be swept away by a good story. They want to be surprised by a plot twist, and they want to put together the clues to figure out "whodunnit." In short, they want to be good readers.
Yes, they want to read for escape, but they also want to read for insight.
There is a whole world of experience out there, and it is embodied in the literature that we read together. They are hungry for the positive reading experiences that they know are possible.
My Project
Our school has so many students that we need to share books in short "shifts", but this project will allow my students to experience these texts without a deadline that doesn't make sense for our classroom community. Help us build a classroom library so that kids for years to come have the luxury of their own book!
Without a restriction on our time with the books, there are no limitations on how far we can go with these amazing stories.
When kids enter the world created by Morrison, they will experience the drama of life for 20th Century African-Americans, as well as her masterful prose style. When kids read about the dystopia created by the characters in Huxley's 1932 novel, they will see their own world reflected in this warped--but eerily accurate--mirror.
With their own copies from our classroom library, students will be able to annotate their reactions and questions. They will be able to bond with the physical object provided by this project, and that means they will more easily bond with the characters, the perspectives, and the other worlds that these texts open up for them.
