This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The statistics- 89% African American and 68% free or reduced lunch.
The facts- My students are amazing!
They are creative and inquisitive. They want to learn and to get the most out of their resources. They also need some help (incentives) to get them to read quality or challenging material, instead of playing video games or playing on social media- just like any middle school student!
As middle school students, they need guidance making good decisions. From the moment they walk into my library, they know that I will help them with their problems and to find something to read that they can relate to. Also, the possibility of winning a prize doesn't hurt.
My Project
Many times my students do not have basic school supplies. By making pencils and pens more easily accessible, they have a better opportunity to have a productive day. My students went through about 100 pencils every week this school year. Many volunteers took time to write positive messages on each pencil. Students eagerly picked the pencil that spoke to them that day. And the excuse of "I don't have a pencil" was no longer valid.
This simple act of kindness has helped to build so many relationships with students.
Many students rely on these pencils and on their daily stop in the library. The conversations we now have let them know that they have one more person looking out for them. Many check out more books than before and come to me when they need help.
Sadly, my supply of pencils is dangerously low. Please help me restock and continue to make this possible.
