Student behavior is a tricky thing. If our students misbehave, not only are they not learning, but the students around them are distracted from learning as well. Although we have fantastic students that love to learn, sometimes we have to motivate them to model positive behavior in the classroom! But how do we motivate our students to behave? With Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)!
Character building and teaching tolerance are integral parts of a child's education, as it encourages them to be responsible and productive members of their school community.
To accomplish this, our school district has adopted a program called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Our students should be rewarded for modeling positive behavior during school! They are energetic and excited learners and they love PBIS! PBIS is a proactive systematic approach that has been found to improve the behavioral outcomes of students in every grade. Our staff members work together to consistently teach, model and reinforce appropriate behaviors that students are expected to use in all areas of the school, including hallways, buses, classrooms, playgrounds, assemblies, and restrooms. PBIS teaches our students to be responsible for their own behaviors.
A vital component of PBIS is rewards for adhering to the rules. For example, students earn snacks for getting to my class on time each day and for modeling positive behavior throughout the week. With the popcorn, Starbursts, Milky Ways and chips, students that have perfect attendance in my classroom will enjoy a treat at the end of each week. Student behavior is reinforced by using an online program called ClassDojo. ClassDojo reinforces positive behaviors and attributes such as tolerance, remaining on-task, helping others, providing awesome answers and persistence.
Your donation to this project will encourage my students to model positive behavior in the classroom regularly and to follow school-wide expectations.
These skills will transfer to their future career after graduation, as well as their personal life. The culture of our classroom will benefit the surrounding community that the students share.
