Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are predominately Hispanic and come from low-income families. Most of them rely on the school to provide all school materials. They are unable to purchase supplies to help them to succeed with challenging advanced art projects. They travel on their own from across the city. Transportation to an art store is difficult.
My students struggle to bring pencils to class.
They have no art supplies of their own. Yet they smile. They have so much faith in all of the teachers at our school site. We teach in an area of high poverty. This year, I feel the need for art supplies more than ever. I met a high number of naturally talented artists in my Introduction to Art class. Many of them dream of attending Fine Arts institutions such as Cal Arts and Art Center. Many dream of becoming animators and illustrators. I decided to design a new class for them. My advanced art students, however, lack basic art supplies needing to build a portfolio. I would like to provide each student with a fine arts kit containing the best drawing, sketch, and painting tools. This project will cover a fraction of the kit.
My Project
Over the past two years I met some phenomenal art students that have a shot at getting scholarships to Universities with an art portfolio, but they lack the basic tools to make this portfolio a reality. Most projects get damaged during their everyday inner city commute.
Most of my South LA students cannot afford to make trips to Blick Art Materials to buy basic sketch materials necessary for creating a professional art portfolio.
I know that my students will be inspired to create more at home if the projects they create are protected.
The students will spend the year using these tools to get into a fine arts college of their dreams. This class is filled with future animators and designers. So many students of poverty struggle with developing their artistic voice because they cannot take materials home. Each student will receive their own kit containing a large variety of pencils, charcoal, markers, and paints. I want each child to start the year knowing that the world believes in their abilities, they have what it takes in their hands. They have the natural talent.
The art supplies will be a motivator. I know in my heart that these kits will inspire them to work harder than they ever had, and create art around the clock.
