This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Super Stars, are a group of 6 and 7 year old first graders who enjoy learning. For some, the only time they are exposed to books and learning activities are when they are at school. I want to expose them to many different ways of learning and give them every opportunity to succeed.
Many of my students were highly affected by Hurricane Harvey but yet they still manage to come to school excited and eager to learn every day.
Due to Hurricane Harvey, some of my students are displaced and are living in foster care, living in shelters, and are being raised by their grandparents, older siblings, and other relatives.
My Project
Our reading curriculum requires that most of our reading block be done in small group work stations. One of our work stations is the listening center. The students love going to the listening center because they are able to feel confident and independent. They also get to read (listen) a variety of books that they otherwise may not have been able to because of their ability level. When they are finished with the book, all students are able to complete a book report at their own level because they were able to listen to the book rather than have to rely solely on their reading skills.
Before, my students had to listen to books on the computer, but thanks to generous donations, we now have books with Cd's.
In order to complete our new listening station, we need portable CD players.
