My Students
What is the best way for kids to learn strategies to become readers and writers? By using high quality books that serve as mentor texts! They support the mini-lesson being taught in the classroom and help students generalize their learning to other books or their own writing.
My students are a wonderful group of first grade students who are developing a love of reading. Everyday my class loves reading and being read to! They are practicing using strategies to decode tricky words and ways to read with an active mind. They are learning strategies to be lifelong readers and I frequently hear, "But can't we read for just five more minutes!"
My Project
These books will be mentor texts for first grade students. I will be reading these books during our reading and writing workshop mini-lessons to model things that readers do (such as: retelling, strategies for decoding words, rereading for a smooth voice, attending to punctuation, noticing patterns, going back and rereading, checking for understanding and character study). These books can also be displayed in our classroom library for students to practice using the skills that have been modeled independently.
Providing high quality mentor texts to our classroom will greatly impact the young readers learning. Students will learn important reading and writing concepts and generalize their learning to other books and their own writing.
