O.W.L.S. is the Outstanding Women of Leadership Society at our High School. It is an organization for female identifying students to work together, build their skills, create school change, and impact their community. Outside of their regular student commitments, members of the society must maintain a leadership role within the our Community, complete 20 service hours throughout the school year, design and implement a "Project for Change" in our school.
These young women work endlessly to improve our school and community. This year they have decided to beautify our school community in efforts to change the culture.
My students are working on developing their leadership skills and community outreach. They have already spent time collaborating and brainstorming to determine a problem within our school community that could be solved - uniforms! Through organization, conferencing, logistical planning, teamwork, and determination they are going to help create a uniform supply center in our school to help those students that are currently struggling to obtain the essentials that they need!
In Their Own Words
The goal for this project is to provide the students who don't have enough money with uniforms and also help set up a system within our school to make this easy and efficient. We want all students in our school to feel welcomed and a part of the community. The first step is for them to have a uniform so they can be ready for class without having to deal with special passes and looking different than their peers. In order for our school to receive other privileges, we all need to be in uniform first!
Throughout this project we will learn how to tackle and problem solve issues throughout the school. We also learn how to work with other organizations in order to improve our school community. By using the team work skills we already have, we will practice collaboration, organization, planning, and project execution skills. We know this system may not run smoothly at first, and we are prepared to use problem solving skills to make it better.
This project is important because students currently aren't all coming to school in uniform and it is preventing us from being able to do any fun school activities. We realized that part of the reason why some kids tend to not wear uniform is because they cannot afford it. Creating a space in our school to support this need and providing students with uniform essentials will decrease the number of students out of uniform and will bring us together as a school community through the fun activities we will then earn.
