Poetry & Pillows

My students need 20 books of poetry, including "Ego-Tripping and Other Poems for Young People" and "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and 2 beanbag chairs.

Mrs. D.
Grades 9-12

We need to eat, breathe, dream, and live poetry if we are ever to understand it. I teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in a high-need school. My class varies each year, and is always comprised of a mixture of cultures and grades 9-12.

The terse, neat structure of a poem seems to be one of the great stumbling blocks of high school lit classes. Take a haiku: just 17 little syllables can shut a kid down for an entire 40 minute class. While I teach ESL, a lot of what I do is grounded in literature, and aims to prepare students for success in regular English classes. One step I'd like to make towards this goal in the upcoming school year is tackling poetry (or at the very least, my students' fear of it). Our main obstacle is that we have a teeny-tiny (read: one shelf) classroom library which is completely devoid of poetry. I want to create a poetry corner where students can hold anthologies in their hands, study authors, and try their hand at writing their own poetry.

During a recent course in children's literature, I designed an extensive poetry webquest that I would like to implement next year along with the creation of a poetry corner in my room. The combination of these two elements will allow both an in depth examination of poetry as well as the authentic experience of reading and incorporating poetry into one's own life. My vision of a poetry corner is a cozy space in my room where kids can curl up with a book of verse and get lost in it. It will have two bean bag chairs, a variety of titles covering everything from Mother Goose to contemporary young adult poetry, and a "Poem in My Pocket" chart containing short monthly and seasonal poems for the students to enjoy. My project will benefit my students by creating an atmosphere where we can learn to enjoy poetry together on a regular basis, rather than leaving it on a dusty shelf from which it will occasionally be withdrawn, dissected, and returned.

Your support will provide a place in my classroom where students can learn to appreciate and understand poetry in a more functional and authentic way than is typically encouraged in a high school setting. By fostering a love of poetry, I hope that my students will more readily confront it on their own and in other classes.
