Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Robert Frost is one of my favorite poets. He once said two things that stuck with me, even until now..."Poetry is what is lost in translation" and "Poetry is a way of taking life by the throat." The way poetry has been taught over the years is boring! I want to change that.

My students are humorous.

They are quick witted and charming, but education, especially reading, is not a high priority. Many of my students hate reading. I want to provide my students with the opportunity to love reading and to understand that it is so very important in their lives, even though they may not understand that right now. Part of reading is opening them up to the idea of thinking outside the box. They need to understand that paperbacks and hard covers are not the only type of literature out there. Poetry provides a whole world of imagination. Bringing in poetry books to the classroom that are not "typical," allows for struggling readers and reluctant poetry lovers to engage in poetry, but to do so in a way that best fits them. The poetry books will spark a student's creativity.

My Project

My students, unfortunately, are not exposed to the many elements of life and literature that other students have the privilege of experiencing. The resources I ordered will help my students dispose of the preconceived notion that poetry is boring and for old people. Instead these books will allow them to look beyond stereotypes and encourage them to enjoy poetry and express themselves. Most of my students are boys, and they think poetry is all about being weeping and loving and all that girly stuff. Poetry goes beyond that, and these resources will help to confirm my teaching.

I am so passionate about this project!

This is my first year teaching, and I want to do everything in my power to make this year the best and most educational for my students. I want them to see how much is in this world, how much they have to learn, and how important and fantastic poetry can be. I think this unit can and will be spectacular with the help of the donors to fund this project!
