This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every year poetry makes my students come alive! I try to start every single class with a poem and students run to class so that they don't miss it. We desperately need some new poems to read in class.

Our school is in an extremely poverty stricken area of New York City.

Many students qualify for free lunch. They enter the school below grade level in reading and writing. The goal of our school is to prepare students for college starting in middle school.

My Project

This year my students have shown a great interest in writing poetry. Our classroom currently has very few poetry books. For the poetry unit that we will be starting soon I want to expose my students to several different poets so they can study them. I am asking for several different anthologies of poetry. One anthology entitled You Hear Me contains poems written by teenage boys. These are poems that my students will be able to relate to and be inspired to write their own poetry.

Your help will provide my students the inspiration they need to create their own anthologies of poetry.

By reading poems about issues that they can relate to students will feel the desire to write about the issues in their own lives.
