Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are Pre-AP and AP (Advanced Placement) students at our high school. They are college bound students who are learning to create and appreciate rhetoric. Since our school is a Title I school, many of my students need federal assistance to be able to eat three meals a day. They may not have a lot of money, but they see that education is the equalizer, and they come to school ready to work hard and be the best humans they can be.
My Project
Poetry tends to find its way into my classroom, whether it's through lessons, activity centers, my stress relief "comfort corner', poetry club meetings, or after-school poetry slams. This project was inspired by my poetry club and by all the students who have been playing with my magnetic poetry set on the side of my filing cabinet for years.
This project will be the perfect way to enrich language instruction for my comfortable writers, turn my kinesthetic learners on to the writing process, and include engaging practice and collaboration with traditional instructional standards.
There will be enough standing magnetic canvases to create poetry in pairs or individually if the sets are in rotating activity centers. There is also a mega-set, so I can keep one of my magnetic classroom whiteboards filled with words in action year-round. Not only will students create poems as responses to prompts, but they will also practice revising by removing words or changing the orders of words or lines. Finally, I will use these magnets for grammar instruction, particularly to teach parallel structure, clauses, and sentence coordination and subordination. This project will make language a hands-on experience in both my English class instructional time and my poetry club meetings.
