Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The high school I teach at is in a unique and difficult situation. The student population qualifies the school as Title I with the entire student body receiving free breakfast and lunch; however, because of the businesses in the area, the district is also falls under Chapter 41 which requires a large portion of the school tax revenue be turned over to the state. This often makes funding for new projects difficult to secure.

The high school I teach at is a small town, Title I school in which the entire student body receives free lunch.

Ninety-one percent of the student population is Hispanic. I teach a variety of students, including students with learning disabilities, students who have limited English proficiency, regular education students, gifted and talented students, and students in Aquatic Science, on-level Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, and AP Chemistry. The students I teach are extremely curious and are eager to learn, and the school community is very close and supportive of new initiatives.

My Project

I learned how to make and use the pocket reviews from a science teacher convention several years ago. The larger envelopes are cut to create a pocket-sized booklet that has one side that unfolds to have four sections to attach or write in important information; the other side retains a pocket that reviews questions or materials that cannot fit on the four sections. The smaller envelopes hold flash cards or cut-outs for card sorts that could get lost. The small envelopes are kept in the larger pocket of the review.

Since I started using the pocket reviews, my students have had an easier time organizing content information in preparation for tests.

When we start creating them during the unit, my students keep example questions and problems in or on them to use while completing assignments for class. It also makes studying for finals easier because all of the information from each unit is located in the pocket review.

The teachers who created these reviews wanted them to fit in the back pocket of a pair of jeans; my students also keep them in their folder pockets or in the smaller pockets of their backpacks.
