I am a first grade teacher in an urban school, in Charlotte, NC. Our school is culturally and economically diverse. I have 21 students in my class. I am responsible for teaching all curriculum to these students. The students in my class are as diverse as our school. The majority of them come from single parent homes, and 60% of them receive free or reduced lunch. The materials I am requesting are books on tape. It is vitally important for children at this age to be immersed in literature. The majority of my students do not have a parent at home that reads them a bedtime story, so they lack the experience of hearing good fluent reading. In order for students to become fluent readers they must have numerous opportunities to read familiar books, and to listen to fluent readers. The books and cassettes I have requested will fulfill this for my students. These books will also benefit my students whose first language is not English. Within the past two years our community has had a large increase of Hispanic families. These children are enrolling in our school with no knowledge of English. Listening to these books will provide them with additional educational opportunities to hear fluent English. These opportunities are vital to their verbal language development. All of the students in my class will benefit from these books on tape. The books will be an asset to my class during center time and reading time. I want all my students to have the opportunity to become better readers. They should all have the same experiences, and I hope to provide that for them with this gift.
