Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Common Core is here to help prepare my students for career and college, but the only problem is that we don't have current technology to help us prepare for the Common Core!

My students are fourth graders who are hard at work trying to become the best students that they can be.

58% of the student population is Hispanic and 30% is African-American. We are a Title I school with 87% of the school on the free or reduced lunch program. We are a Dual Language Immersion school, but my classroom is an English only classroom. My students range from first grade reading levels all the way to fifth grade reading levels. Some of my students go to RSP and a couple of students are GATE students. The diversity in my classroom is extreme and needs many different tools to support each child. Currently our technology situation at our school site is lacking in order to support a full class of 33 fourth graders. Sometimes most of the computers work, and other times some of the computers aren't working. This leaves several students with out a computer to use. Inside my classroom we have 5 computers, but two of the computers function normally.

My Project

Since the implementation of Common Core, so much focus has gone into the Close reading strategy and using technology with Common Core. Having the minis in the classroom, students will be able to use the iPad app called Subtext to read different texts while focusing on Common Core language arts standards. I will be able to assign certain readings and comprehension questions to students and track their progress. The app Subtext allows students to highlight the answers in the text they are reading and will require them to type in their answers instead of choosing a multiple choice answer. In the future, students will be required to take the CC test on a computer. They will need to know how to highlight answers and how to type their answers, which the minis will teach them. Subtext can also be used for different reading levels. Students will also be able to use the minis to access math programs such as IXL, Khan Academy, and Tenmarks. The possibilities of using a mini are endless!

My students aren't receiving the same technological opportunities as schools in a better socio-economic area.

How can we expect them to be career and college ready when they don't have the technology required to do so? Your donation will help by giving 2 minis to a deserving class of 33. Although they'll have to share, at least you will be giving them an opportunity to prepare themselves for the Common Core and a technological world. They deserve the same opportunities as anyone else.
