This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am lucky enough to work in an urban Special Education Inclusion classroom with 24 students in first, second, and third grades. We are a high need, Montessori school with an incredibly diverse population.

Currently, I have a particle board easel with a pad of chart paper clipped to it with a number of binder clips. One hinge is broken, so it is precariously located against the wall and between two cabinets that support it. I use the easel several times a day for small and whole-group lessons, and it is difficult. We use a lot of paper and, because of the rickety condition of the current easel, I am nervous to have students use the easel in a more participatory way.

A wheeled easel with a magnetic whiteboard would give my classroom many more options than we have. We would be able to use magnetic letters for spelling instruction and my students would more easily be able to participate and write themselves on the board in interactive lessons. We would drastically reduce the amount of paper we use for lessons as well. Its portability would mean increased flexibility for where lessons take place.
