I am a general education fourth grade teacher at an inner-city public school that offers general education instruction to students who are eager to approach learning using the most innovative ways that can be given to them for success.
My school is centered in a community deemed as low socioeconomic and a high population of English language learners and special needs students.
My students are energetic, yet extremely challenged in promoting higher order thinking skills due to the limited resources and lack of funding to our school community.
Being an educator in the inner city is extremely challenging. More than anything, it pulls on my heartstrings to help children who are eager to come to school, but lack the essential school supplies due to homelessness. My school is located in a community where homelessness is becoming more prevalent than ever before.
As a passionate educator, it is my belief that I must nurture the child as a whole and go above and beyond to meet their needs, even when students do not feel comfortable asking.
The use of all these basic school supplies will help to supplement the needs of students whose parents are financially challenged to do so themselves. The pencil sharpeners are needed to ensure that their pencils are sharpened each day for assignment completion at school and home. I desire for children to feel like achievers in my classroom and never think that the lack of supplies will hinder their learning. Each year, I am faced with students who come into class discouraged because they do not have adequate supplies for learning. It is my hope that "no child is left behind" in my classroom. "Homelessness" does not equate to "Hopelessness" in my learning environment. It is my desire to offer these children the tangible resources that are needed to jumpstart their school year geared toward success. I hope that you will partner with me to make a positive impact on the students in my classroom.
