My students need new, high quality tables to work at. They need table caddies and seat sacks to help organize their materials and keep them at hands reach.
My students are a wonderful group of young explorers. Their innate curiosity and joy in discovery make the classroom a lively, engaging space and motivates me to do everything I can to give them a strong foundation in learning. My students largely come from a low socioeconomic background, and nearly all are emergent English speakers.
Unfortunately, the amount of high quality learning materials in our classroom is a poor match for the enthusiasm and potential to be found there.
Having a largely ELL populated classroom means that my students are learning English as well as basic literacy and math. They benefit greatly from high quality multimodal materials. Given that we are a Title I school, and our resources are severely limited. Over the past few years our community of donors have helped to create classrooms that transcend these economic limitations, and have allowed our children and teachers the benefit of the highest quality learning resources and materials from art supplies to new libraries to robotics. Truly, we have seen the maxim 'if you can dream it, you can do it' come to life in our classrooms.

My Project
We are opening a new first grade classroom at P.S. 126.--my own maiden Voyage teaching first grade. I have been able to cobble together enough seats, as well as some shelving units for my new classroom, and some lovely colleagues have given me hand-me-down cubbies. What is really needed most are quality work tables that the children can use during their independent work in the classroom. I have asked for rectangular tables because I have found that these type of tables can be arranged around the common meeting areas without overwhelming those spaces. I have also asked for caddies where supplies can be kept at close reach for the children, and for seat sacks, where they can keep their journals, poetry books, and Word Work books at close reach.
