My Students
I teach in an urban area in Massachusetts. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They range from high honors to special education students, and enjoy reading a variety of genres from Mythology to graphic novels. I provide as much as I can for my students beyond the actual classroom, sometimes it's meals or a sweater, other times it's a book that their parents can't afford. I try to keep my classroom library as stocked as possible, but it's hard to keep up with all the amazing books that are coming out!
My Project
I teach in a low income school with a very diverse student population. I try to stock my classroom library with all different genres of books. Buying books out of my own pocket has become difficult. My school provides books for guided reading and unit studies, but our classroom libraries are funded out of pocket.
My students need more choices of high interest novels available to them.
We are encouraging students to read, but it is not fair to do that when some classrooms do not even have books to read for leisure. I constantly have teachers, students, and even the principal, coming into my classroom to borrow books from me.
If every classroom cannot have a small library available, then I am going to make sure that mine is stocked as best as it can be!
