This year in my Literature class we will explore the many elements of literature through different genres of texts. We start the year off with a classic novel, Where the Red Fern Grows. Through reading this novel, students will be able to expand their knowledge of the literary elements by reading and discussing as a whole class or with small groups. We will then move on to Biographies/Autobiographies where students will conduct research on 3 people (a historical figure, an entertainer/athlete, and someone they know personally). Then we will transition into our Drama unit. During this unit we read the screenplay Brian's Song. Mid year we move on to shorter units such as Short Stories and Poetry. We will end the year in Literary Circles groups. This is a student centered reading group where students will choose a novel they are interested in, and read, discuss, and facilitate their own group activities.
