Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want to put the pride back into being a "good" student and lifelong learner. For many of our students the line between "survival" and "want" is very thin. I want my students to learn how to make good decisions and to understand the difference between right and wrong.

My class consists of 10 second grade students and 14 first grade students.

They represent 6 different cultures and 19 speak a language other than English at home. Our school is located in an urban area surrounded by both apartments and single family homes. Most of my students live in homes with multiple family members sharing the same space with limited amounts of food, clothes and time. They travel to their home country each year, but have never been more than 5 miles away from where they live. Our students love to learn but need guidance as to how to get along with the others in school as well as in their neighborhood.

My Project

First I am requesting a small group meeting table. This table will become the safe place where small groups of students can gather to either talk or write about their problems. When children can analyze a problem, they are well on their way to being able to solve that problem. The 13 books that I have selected each focus on a character trait. By offering weekly character trait lessons and then following those lessons up with practice and praise, they should become part of their everyday life. I also need a character education pocket chart. Since young students relate with characters in books I have chosen to launch each lesson with one of these books and then follow it up with discussion and an activity. When students are able to make good choices and solve problems their learning time is more wisely spent and their propensity to get into trouble becomes minimal.

If one doesn't know how to get along with others or how to share at a young age how do we expect them the become good citizens?

This project will touch the lives of more than just this one group of 24 students. It will impact them, their friends and hopefully their siblings. It is like starting the day with a good breakfast. They will be starting their lives as lifelong learners.
