Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our middle school is a diverse high-needs school of about 1,400 sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students. Almost half of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our hallways are filled with great diversity and I strive to bring this diversity into my classroom and into my curriculum.
My ELLs (English Language Learners) are motivated, intelligent and compassionate individuals who are excited about learning.
These students come from Central/Latin America, South Asia and the Middle East. They are active learners who appreciate the opportunities they are given. They are hungry to learn English and they understand that the best way to do this is to practice their English every day!
My Project
A few years ago, I began using DonorsChose to build a classroom library full of English, Spanish and other multicultural books that my students could borrow and read at their leisure. I was an avid reader as a child, and I wanted to help my ELLs develop this love with high-quality, young adult books, as well as picture books.
Having a classroom library, filled with high-interest books at their disposal, can make this possible.
This project will help us add English and Spanish books to our classroom library. Most of the books we are requesting are graphic novels. These books are beautifully illustrated and have short concise language. They are a perfect entryway into learning how to read in English. Furthermore, graphic novels can help a child fall in love with reading and motivate them to continue reading and eventually gain the necessary language skills to read chapter books and novels. My students are also requesting some Spanish books so that they continue practicing their reading skills in their native language. I whole-heartedly believe in encouraging my ELLs to continue developing their Spanish reading skills because these reading skills can transfer over to English reading skills.
If a student enjoys reading, that student will be more apt to work on the necessary skills to become a better reader. And this skill can open the world to a student. Education is the key to freedom. With an education, a child can go anywhere. Reading can take them to places they never thought they could go.
