My Students
I work with a student that is very diverse, most of whom come from low-income households, so they don't have access to many resources outside of the school setting.
These students I work with have experienced a huge increase in their stress and anxiety due to Covid and are in need of a lot of support to help them better regulate emotionally.
However, they are so open to receiving support and it is inspiring and heartening to see them take what they learn and change their lives for the better.
My Project
The items I have requested in my project are aimed at helping students to have access to supports to help them better manage negative emotions and behaviors.
Due to the increase in stress and anxiety in my students, related to the impact of Covid, the students in my low-income school are in need of much more access to mindfulness and stress management materials, to help them better manage these emotions.
Most of them come from low-income households, so they cannot afford these items on their own.
The mindfulness group I run is a lunch group, so having snacks for them helps to make it a more supportive experience at that time of day. I have asked for many different types of sensory items that can be used for self-soothing and self-regulation in my office, at school, and at home.
I go to different schools that do not have a white noise machine, and maintaining privacy for students is important, so I asked for one as part of my project.
These low-income schools do not have funding for therapeutic books and activities or craft materials either, so I have asked for several of these to help my students better meet their mental health needs.
