Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

This project is to try and reach the struggling readers. I have a complex class this year which includes many circumstances that impede success. There are 2 sets of siblings (one set is twins) the other is a retained brother and his grade-level sister. There are 2 homeless students whose father is incarcerated. I have 5 left-handed students this year. There are 7 students with IEPs (2 who are diagnosed with ADHD/Oppositional Defiance Disorder, 2 who are LD, and 2 who are dyslexic). There are 4 students with 504s, plus 2 who are classified as gifted. One of my students has been absent 25 days with no excuse. To say, "It's complicated," would be an understatement. A barrage of emotional turmoil is a continuum, the academic grade levels are 1-2 below their current grade, and I have been doing all that I can with my 20 students.

I have incorporated Lexia and UDL as well as training in the Science of Reading.

I believe in these theories and are all evidence-based. Recently I have been using and teaching the students how to use morphemes, graphemes, and phonemes specifically. We have been mapping words for words they struggle with while reading. This strategy revealed remarkable gains, and the students enjoy the process. They marvel at the new methods which are helping everyone. There is a greater and more positive atmosphere instead of negativity.

I am requesting the Rocket Pens to assist my dyslexic students so they can stay on task with oral reading, plus more. The Kindles are requested for my gifted students so they can read in silence and have a sense of independence during times when I am engaged with the need-based students. All supplies are for the entire class to focus on the Science of Reading so that all students can be successful!
