Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are residents of East Palo Alto, a racially and socioeconomically segregated community nestled within the massive wealth and privilege of Silicon Valley. They are the faces of resilience, hope, and positivity amidst aggressive gentrification and displacement facing their community. They are hard-working, amazingly kind-hearted, joyous scholars who belie the fact that approximately 42% of children in the district are classified as homeless.

In December, I received a newcomer student from Mexico who knew ZERO letters!

He is incredibly joyful, kind, and hardworking, but he needs a lot of extra support during the school day to feel successful. While most of his peers are reading books with multi-paragraph pages, he cannot yet distinguish the sounds and letters of his own name. He has a long journey to achieve parity with his classmates, but I know he can get there with the tools, instruction, and resources he needs to thrive!

Please help me purchase a fun, interactive, and visually engaging tool for him to explore and learn the alphabet. Letter sound recognition is so crucial to even scratch the surface of work in first grade. These tubs will provide him with such a joyous way to delve into the world of letters and sound awareness!

Another student in my class has learning differences which make it hard for her to recall letter names and sounds. She is one of the most hilarious, kind, and thoughtful students I have ever met. I know she will have such a fantastic time helping our newcomer student learn letter names and sounds, while practicing her own burgeoning skills.

This newcomer is not the first additional student I've received late in the year unable to recognize even one letter. Please help my current and future students master the most foundational task of letter recognition!
