Playing with Purpose-- Djembe Drumming for Special Needs Learners

My Project

Djembe drums will provide my students with a much needed opportunity to play as an ensemble in their special needs classroom. The majority of my students have limited experience making music in a group and have difficulty reading traditional music notation. Challenges with physical dexterity and fine motor skills present a further obstacle to many of my students who struggle in this area. For these reasons playing traditional instruments can be very difficult. Djembe drums offer a wonderful opportunity to modify lessons, playing technique and repertoire so students can easily play together. This experience will undoubtedly impact their music education in a most positive way.
