Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in our school come from families who are invested in their children. They are loved and it shows. It shows every day a child is in school instead of at home. We know that students do not learn and live in a bubble. Our school is the first out-of-home structured environment that our students experience.

It is important to value our students' home and culture to better prepare them for the world they will eventually face.

We know that students who are not in a high socio-economic bracket and are considered minorities or people of color, have a more difficult time ins school than their privileged counterparts. We must make huge tsunami waves to help fight this injustice.

My Project

For this project, I thought about my students and what they would like to do and how they learn best. I decided giving them opportunities to play with a dollhouse and a family representing Black people would provide this.

When engaged in purposeful play, students access language, negotiate space, and develop friendships.

I also include materials so they can write about their experiences. Finally, I included a book that I feel will help me look critically at my curriculum to ensure there are no undertones of racism or colonialism.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
